The Challenge

While up in Sandpoint last month I made it a point to talk to a few family members about our health goals, etc and decided to open up a family blog. In it we could share healthy changes we have made and wanted to share, vent our frustrations at not saying no to that slice of key lime pie (or share our jubilation when we actually did find the willpower to say no to the seductive call of refined sugar).

I also brought up something dad and I had started but (understandably) stopped during these last few months.

There is no pussyfooting around the issue (sorry pop) but we both need to lose weight and dad had suggested awhile back that we have a bit of a contest to see who would lose more. Essentially there was no "grand prize" or anything...just the satisfaction that we would both be healthier in the end.

No more.

I am here to announce the Zimmerman family "lets do it" project....anyone is invited to participate since the actual goal here is to become a healthier family.

No hard and fast rules....no pressure.

But I am offering a challenge to anyone who seriously wants to improve their health. I don't care if it is a goal of weight loss, lowering of cholesetrol, increasing endurance.....depending on what your goal is (you do not need to be super-specific....I am not asking for you to start posting food diaries, test results, starting weights, etc unless you really want to) lets start supporting one another. Need to knock 20 points off your cholesterol? We can help support that by sharing good pointers we find along the way. Need to lower your blood pressure? We'll try to keep from provoking you!

Dad and I need to pick up our weight loss challenge (we start on Monday dad!) and anyone who wants to join is free to. The "Winner" is not necessarily the one who loses the most weight but we can take a vote on who we think worked the hardest or overcame the most hurdles....whatever. Originally the prize was bragging rights but I am willing to give the winner a $200 "spa day"....whether its an actual day at a spa or another form of relaxation. End date will be next summer.

Leah and I were tossing around the idea of a family trip to the coast of Washington to bum around Seattle, hike through the rainforests, rent cabins on the ocean, go whale-watching....whatever. If we decide that we want to go ahead and plan a little excursion, I'll consider that a good time for us to make our decisions. For those of us with more than a year ahead of us in weight loss, we'll start the second round up at that time.

As for me personally....I know I will still look a bit like a beached whale in a swimsuit next summer.....but I want it to be a much smaller whale than the one I look like now (think humpback rather than blue whale!) For a gal who loves to swim but hasn't done so for the last 4 or 5 years, its about time I got a swimsuit and hauled my fat butt off to the local rec center.

I'll start the challenge with another post with my current goals listed....you can always add more goals later!
